Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of
the Constitution of Ukraine
On June 29, 2026, US Ukrainian Activists (USUA) President Nadiya Shaporynska was honored to attend, at the invitation of Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Olha Stefanishyna, a commemorative diplomatic event at the House of Sweden in Washington, D.C., marking the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of Ukraine and celebrating the enduring ties between Ukraine and the United States.
The celebration brought together Members of Congress, senior representatives of the U.S. Administration, ambassadors and members of the diplomatic corps, think tank leaders, business leaders, media representatives, and the Ukrainian American community to honor Ukraine’s enduring constitutional tradition and democratic values.
This year’s venue carried special symbolism. Sweden is home to the original 1710 Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk, one of Europe’s earliest democratic constitutions, underscoring the deep historical roots of Ukraine’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law, human dignity, and freedom.
The program featured remarks by Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Olha Stefanishyna; Chargé d’Affaires of Sweden in the United States Jonas Wendel; Congressman Joe Wilson; Congressman Gil Cisneros; former U.S. Under Secretary of State Paula J. Dobriansky; Co-Founder and President of the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation Robert McConnell; President of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America Michael Sawkiw; and renowned Ukrainian chef Yevhen Klopotenko.
We were especially grateful to see strong bipartisan support for Ukraine from Members of Congress, including Congressman Joe Wilson, Congressman Jim Costa, and Congressman Gil Cisneros. Their leadership and continued support reflect the enduring strength of the U.S.-Ukraine partnership and our shared commitment to freedom, sovereignty, and a just and lasting peace.
The celebration was also joined by representatives of the U.S. Administration, including Riley M. Barnes, Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor; Chris Curran, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Europe and Russia at the National Security Council; Sarah Miller Beebe, Deputy Senior Director for Europe and Russia at the National Security Council; and Silvia Savich, Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative.
As the United States prepared to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its independence, this meaningful occasion served as a reminder of the enduring bond between our nations. Ukraine continues to fight for its independence, freedom, sovereignty, and the values enshrined in its Constitution, with the steadfast support of its partners.
Following the program, guests enjoyed a special reception inspired by traditional Ukrainian recipes curated by renowned Ukrainian chef Yevhen Klopotenko. The dishes were expertly prepared by Ruta, the first Ukrainian restaurant in Washington, D.C., and paired with exceptional SHABO wines, offering guests a memorable taste of Ukraine’s rich culinary heritage.
